Pictures from the match
From Basingstoke Official:

Town got off to a bright start with Man of the match Ross Montague picking the ball up inside his own half and Matt Warner combining, the former not quite able to get his shot away. Town continued to pressurise the Shots in the opening 10 minutes with David Tarpey unable to make contact when in a good position. Montague picked up a misplaced pass and forced a brave save at his feet from Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz in the Shots goal and Ian Jones drove a shot straight at the keeper. The visitors came into the game with Lewis Chalmers putting through the dangerous Junior Mendes, somehow putting his shot wide from a position where he should have hit the target. Rob Watkins made a fine block after Mendes had set up John Grant, the Stoke defenders did a fine job keeping Grant quiet and he was not to influence this game like he had the FA cup two years previous. The final shot of the first half fell to Tom Hateley whose long range curling effort forced Jaimez-Ruiz to turn the ball wide. David Winfield found his way into the referee’s notebook for a foul on Montague as he was trying to turn and get a shot in from just outside the box.

As the night got ever colder and the pitch ever whiter as the frost came down the crowd were hoping for a result in normal time. But as the half developed it looked more and more as though extra-time and penalties would be needed. Early in the second half a long free kick from Hateley made its way through the box missing everyone on the way. Adam Aimable played a long ball to Tarpey who chipped wide of the far post. Montague intercepted a poor pass and should have done better shooting wide from distance. Tarpey made a fine run down the right, cut inside and beat his marker but the cross was disappointing. Likewise at the other end the Shots had a good break but carelessly ran the ball into touch. Ian Jones incurred the wrath of the referee, booked for kicking the ball away. Tarpey who impressed on the night played in Hateley who forced a corner. The latter took the corner and was met at the near post by Watkins whose header was wide of the mark. The deadlock was finally broken on 71 minutes, Warner's corner from the left solidly headed past Jaimez-Ruiz by Ross Montague.

From here on it was all Aldershot as they raised their game and forced an equaliser and then looked to take the game in the regulation time. Midfielder Adam Mekki hit a dangerous dipping cross from the right that was headed behind for a corner. Basingstoke failed to clear the corner kick and some intelligent Shots passing reached substitute Mekki on the right who dispatched a crisp drive for Shots 76th minute leveller. Both goals had come after the teams had substituted and were re-organising. Heavy Shots pressure seemed likely to bring a winner, with the lively Mekki latching onto Chalmers' pass for a one-on-one. But the ball stuck under Mekki's feet and Basingstoke's keeper smothered the chance. Scott Donnelly curled a nice free kick at goal but Kitteridge pushed it wide, and Rob Elvins saw a shot on the turn blocked. In injury time Elvins was foiled again, and Chalmers hit the bar. What the crowd had been dreading was now a reality, at least another 30 minutes.

It was now almost as cold as that famous December night in 1997 when Northampton Town visited in the FA cup. As the first half of extra time got under way even those in the stand were on their feet . The fire of the 90 minutes seemed to go out in extra-time, and it looked as if penalties would settle the tie. Jombarti had a shot straight at the keeper, Hateley had a shot over the bar and then tried to chip the keeper who was off his line from 30 yards. In the second half Phil Ruggles had a shot smothered and when he had got clear of the Shots defence play was called back for an injury to an Aldershot player. But as everyone was resigned to an even later night the drama unfolded. Tom Hateley’s corner should have been an easy take for the Shots’ keeper but he failed to hold it under pressure from Ruggles.

In the ensuing scramble the referee spotted a handball and awarded the Dragons a penalty. Up stepped Jombarti who confidently sent Jamiez-Ruiz the wrong way for his first goal for the club and Town to march into the last eight. This now means five unbeaten for Stoke as they look forward to the weekend Trophy game against Brackley Town.
